Fire safety is not only based on technical know-how but also on the knowledge gained by different attempts to solve a particular problem.
Such knowledge is equally important in an international context, where the experience gained from unusual or singular accidents can enable other practitioners to learn from colleagues who were challenged to solve a particularly difficult problem arising outside their normal daily fire-fighting routine. Fire-fighting professionals in Denmark and especially those who were directly involved, still remember the firework incident at Seest and the DLG silo fire in Esbjerg. However, those experiences had not been shared with a wider international forum until now.
In recognition of the need for such knowledge sharing, DBI – Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology has contributed to a book on silo fires, published recently by Wiley-VCH, one of the larger publishers of technical material. The Book - Fires in Silos Hazards, Prevention, and Fire Fighting, 137 pages in length, gives a broad coverage of the special problems connected with storage of the large quantities of combustible material found in silos.
Separate chapters describe material properties, ignition sources, explosion risk and explosion protection, fire detection, extinguishing and protection.
DBI prepared a case study, based on material from the Danish Emergency Management Agency and Esbjerg Fire Brigade, which is a detailed account of the DLG silo fire, which burned for nine months. In recognition of the efforts of the DEMA and Esbjerg Fire Brigade, a photograph of the Esbjerg silo has been awarded pride of place on the front cover.
