The use of fire classification in the Nordic countries – Proposals for harmonisation

The implementation of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) has opened up the European market for building products. A CE-marked product can be put on the market anywhere within the EU.

The system with harmonised standards for testing and classification has lead to a common language for the regulators in each member state. However this process is complicated and the speed of implementation in national building codes varies between countries.

In the Nordic countries the process has progressed quite far and the harmonised classes have been implemented in the national building codes. This does however not mean that all countries use the same class for the same building type, the building codes differ to a certain extent in this matter.

This report has been written in cooperation between the fire research and testing institutes and the building authorities in the Nordic countries. The proposals given are a result from discussions within the project and aim to reduce obstacles from a regulation point of view for industry, authorities and other actors.
